NookPhone Guide – Part 1: An Introduction

Getting your very own NookPhone is one of the first welcoming gifts from Tom Nook as you start setting up your island paradise. It’s important to know the ins-and-outs of the apps within the phone so you can craft to your hearts content, play with others on your island, take amazing photos of your everyday life, and more! So without further ado, let’s dive into this new piece of technology!


Default Apps

Below are all the NookPhone Apps we know so far that are available when you start your island adventure!

Below this section, we’ll cover the apps you can unlock during gameplay!


Camera App

How To Take A Photo
  1. Press the “SL” button on your controller to access the NookPhone
  2. Navigate to the Camera icon and press “A”
  3. Make any adjustments you need:
    1. Adjust the position of the camera with the up, down, left, and right arrow buttons.
    2. Adjust the zoom setting with the “X” button (to increase the zoom) and the “Y” button (to decrease the zoom)
    3. Add a Frame and/or Date to your photo by pressing the left trigger (“L”) and continue to press the left trigger to switch between options such as, Frame, Cinema, Time, Date, and combinations of the four.
    4. Add a Filter to your photo with the left shoulder button (“ZL”) and continue to press the left shoulder button to change the filter to your liking
    5. Change the Reaction of your character and any accompanying villagers with the right shoulder button (“ZR”) and selecting a reaction via the pop up menu, i.e Happiness, Love, Glee, etc.
    6. The right shoulder button is to be speculated!
  4. Press the “+” on your controller once you’re happy with the changes you’ve made to save your photo!

After you have captured the perfect photo, you can find it saved to your Nintendo Switch’s Album and can be selected, shared, and deleted through the settings within your Album on your Switch’s home screen.

Nook Miles App

How To Get Nook Miles
  1. Press the “SL” button on your controller to access the NookPhone
  2. Navigate to the Tanooki (raccoon) standing on the world icon (Nook Miles) and press “A”
  3. Use either Joystick to navigate through the available Nook Miles Tasks, and once you find an interesting one; press “A”
  4. Read about the details of the challenge and perform the necessary tasks.
  5. After completing the tasks, press the “+” button on your controller and navigate to the Nook Miles icon.
  6. Use either Joystick to navigate to the Nook Miles challenge you have completed and press “A” to open the pop up window to claim the Nook Miles.
  7. Press “A” again or review the Nook Miles challenge again and press “A” when you’re ready.
  8. You will then have a pop up window displaying how many Nook Miles you have received for completing the challenge. Press “A” again to collect those hard earned Nook Miles!

The video below shows a player going through the Nook Miles app, selecting to complete the “Bulletin Board Benefit” task, and using the app again to collect the Nook Miles!

DIY Recipes App

How To View Your DIY Recipes
  1. Press the “SL” button on your controller to access the NookPhone
  2. Navigate to the hammer and framed acorn (DIY Recipes) icon and press “A”
  3. Within this menu you can view every craftable item you have unlocked, and what materials are necessary to make a certain item! Your craftable items are categorized by Tools, Furniture, Signs, Nature-Based Accessories, and more!

How To Make A DIY Recipe

In the beginning of the game, you will have to walk to Resident Services and use Tom Nook’s workbench. Here you will open a crafting menu where you can select from the current craftable items you have unlocked.

How To Unlock DIY Recipes

You can unlock DIY Recipes from:

  • getting them from your island’s villagers
  • finding them inside a “message in a bottle” which wash up on shore
  • taking crafting lessons in Resident Services
  • purchase them with Nook Miles, via the Nook Miles App

Map App

How To Preview Your Island
  1. Press the “SL” button on your controller to access the NookPhone
  2. Navigate to the map with location symbol (Map) icon and press “A”
  3. Here you will have a full screen view of your island and be able to select and travel to different map markers (you will always have a “mini-map” of your island while you’re playing)

Call Islander App

How To Invite Friends To Your Island (Multiplayer)
  1. Press the “SL” button on your controller to access the NookPhone
  2. Navigate to the yellow flag (Call Islander) icon and press “A”
  3. You will be able to select from a horizontal list of villagers who share the same island (the friends/family who share the Nintendo Switch)
    1. Call Islander, is for couch co-op play (Party Play); up to 8 players can live on the same island, and up to 4 of those players can play at the same time together.
    2. The first player to call the other players is known as the leader; the other players will follow the leader, and the camera will always stay focused on the leader. (ACNH does not support split-screen)
    3. You can change the leader anytime you want by forming as a group (standing closer together), and the new leader presses the right arrow “>” button on the controller.
    4. Only the leader can go shopping too, so you may have to use this handy “swap the leader” feature if one of your islanders wants to buy something specific and you’re not available.
    5. Any creature caught, item crafted, or item collected will automatically be put in the recycle box inside Resident Service. These items can be easily picked up later!

Unlockable Apps

Now we will get into the Unlockable NookPhone Apps that can be obtained by completing certain requirements!


Custom Designs App

How To Make A Custom Design
  1. Press the “SL” button on your controller to access the NookPhone
  2. Navigate to the shirt and pencil (Custom Designs) icon and press “A”.
  3. You will be brought to a menu where you can create custom patterns to later customize furniture, clothing, and many other items to fit your unique style!

below are a few Custom Patterns that can be applied directly to your character!

How To Import Custom Patterns from Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Happy Home Designer
  1. Go to your app store and search for the “NookLink” app.
  2. Once downloaded, you can scan QR code’s from within either of the two games (New Leaf and Happy Home Designer)
  3. These scanned QR codes will then upload the design to be used in Animal Crossing: New Horizons to customize your clothing, furniture, and other items!

Passport App

How To Edit Your Passport

  1. Press the “SL” button on your controller to access the NookPhone
  2. Navigate to the Notebook (Passport) icon and press “A”.
  3. Press “A” again within your passport view to edit.
  4. This will bring up a edit menu, i.e. Passport Photo, Comment, and Title
  5. Here you can edit the categories above to your hearts desire! Happy editing!

Rescue Service App

How To Get Rescued
  1. Press the “SL” button on your controller to access the NookPhone
  2. Navigate to the helicopter (Rescue Service) icon and press “A”
  3. You will go through a short screen and be brought to “somewhere cozier” (gently dropped in front of your tent)

Island Designer App

How To Design Your Island

  1. Press the “SL” button on your controller to access the NookPhone
  2. Navigate to the character wearing a hard hat (Island Designer) icon and press “A”
  3. Here you will be able to choose from many different options to fully customize your island paradise:
    1. Choose between many ground and path tiles
    2. Switch to a Waterscaping Permit to completely alter to flow of your islands river(s), and of course, create beautiful waterfalls!
    3. Switch to a Cliff-Construction Permit to manipulate the ground levels of your island and make room for all of those stone stairs!

Nook Shopping App

How To Go Shopping

  1. Press the “SL” button on your controller to access the NookPhone
  2. Navigate to the shopping cart with a leaf (Nook Shopping) icon and press “A”
  3. At this time, there is not much information out for the Nook Shopping app, but it can be speculated that you will be using your Nook Miles to spend points and shop for common and unique items!
  4. Unlocked after buying 100 items via the Nook Terminal

This section will be updated upon release of the game!

Best Friends List App

How To Get The Best Friends List App

All you have to do to get the Best Friends List App is to be connected to online, and talk to Orville the Dodo bird behind the counter at your Airport. Orville will talk about and explain the app to you, and then add it to your NookPhone!

How To Add To Your Best Friends List
  1. Press the “SL” button on your controller to access the NookPhone
  2. Navigate to the male & female heads (Best Friends List) icon and press “A”
  3. You can now add other players To your Best Friends List and notify them!
    1. The Best Friends App is mainly for security purposes while playing couch co-op and online to protect your hard work.
      1. Certain tools are forbidden for players to use; such as axes and and shovels unless you’ve added them to your Best Friends List (see slide 2 for the forbidden tools pop up when a player is not on the list)

Wildlife? App

How To See When & Where Wildlife Can Be Found

  1. Press the “SL” button on your controller to access the NookPhone
  2. Navigate to the butterfly and fish (Critterpedia) icon and press “A”
  3. Critterpedia will be a directory of the creatures you’ve found, where you can find them, what time of day/year they can be found, and cataloged details of the creatures you’ve caught such as weight, size, etc.
