The guide has been updated to include the additions in Happy Island Designer v0.2.0!

Can you believe this beautifully crafted map planner/editor? I sure didn’t when I first saw it, but wow; the presentation for the icons is on point, and The icons come in plenty! A huge thanks to u/eugeneration for creating this masterpiece!

In this Guide we’re going to go over all of the icons you can use for laying down land, water, and paths. Along with the different housing, tree, and camping icons. And last but not least the icons for community buildings, i.e. Town Hall, Airport, and more!

So without further ado, let’s get into it!

Overview

First things first, when you first open up the web app in your browser, no download needed, you will immediately be greeted with a preloaded island. This island is very much like one of the four you will choose from in game!

On the very left side, you have your options menu. This is the meat, or the brains if you will, of this entire operation. Here you can choose from the 7 main icons list; Paint Terrain, Lay Paths, Place Housing, Place Community Buildings, Place Bridges, Plant Trees, and Plant Flowers. I will be using this naming structure below as the main header for each section to make the guide easier to follow!

On the very top right we now have undo and redo buttons; a very needed quality of life updated included in the new Happy Island Designer v0.2.0!

To paint on the canvas, simply click/tap the Icon from the menu’s explained below, and left click and drag your mouse, or drag your finger across the screen. That’s it!

Paint Terrain

In the very first menu, we get the terrain elements. From Top to Bottom:

  • Highest elevation of grass
  • Middle elevation of grass
  • Lowest elevation (ground level) of grass
  • Rocks
  • Sand/Beach
  • Water

We now have easy access to adjust the brush size and switch between the brush and drawing a line; all located on the left side of Paint Terrain menu.

Lay Paths

Within the second menu, we get the different paths we can lay down. From Top to Bottom:

  • Dirt Path
  • Stone Path
  • Brick Path
  • Sand Path
  • Eraser Tool

At the very bottom of this menu, we have the eraser tool which can be used to erase any tiles from this menu and the 2 menus below it. Otherwise, you can also have the item/icon selected and press the “delete” key on your keyboard.

We also have access to the brush and line tools from the Lay Paths menu as well.

Place Housing/Trees

In the third menu we have many different icons for tents, houses, buildings, and actual models of the player and villager houses.

From Top to Bottom we have:

The Hotkeys menu is accessed by clicking/tapping the question mark icon on the bottom of the side menu.

If your familiar with using the photo editing software Photoshop, then your in luck and can easily hit the ground running with this map editor’s hotkeys. But if you’re not familiar with Photoshop, don’t worry! The hotkeys for Happy Island Designer are simple, and very easy to catch on to.

Saving, Loading, and Starting Over

This menu is accessed via the menu options icon (three horizontal bars)

These options can help you solve questions like How to save your Happy Island Designer map, How to load a previously made map, and How to start a completely new map design!

Icons from left to right

  • Save – Click/Tap this button to save your island paradise to your phone or computer.
  • Load – Click/Tap this button to load in a previously made island (currently not working)
  • New – Click/Tap this button to erase your currently island and start fresh (you’ll have to accept this selection via another pop up menu “Clear your map? This will lose all unsaved changes.”)

Conclusion

This particular map editor has a lot of functionality to it for you to select many types of terrain, paths, buildings, and trees. The absolute best thing about it though, in my humble opinion, is the design. Eugeneration’s map editor looks like it could have been designed by the Animal Crossing: New Horizons development team; it fits the charm of Animal Crossing perfectly.

So with the tips from this guide you’re ready to get started on your island paradise! Simply click or tap the button below to open the map editor in your browser!

Alternative Map Editor

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Map Editor in Google Sheets

If for some reason you can’t open/use the Happy Island Designer, or you don’t like using it in general; there is another map editor created by u/HomeTinkerer. It utilizes Google Sheets, a free, online, Microsoft Excel-like software, where you copy and paste the terrain, trees, and buildings into the selected spots on the grid.

It’s extremely simple to use, and I recommend trying both Map Editors to see which one fits you best!
